The hidden workload
Studies of nursing time put documentation at somewhere between a fifth and two-fifths of a 12-hour shift. That’s anywhere from two to nearly five hours a day spent recording care rather than giving it. Every extra screen, repeated entry and alert that doesn’t matter adds to it

What good looks like
Fewer clicks to record the basics. Tablets or phones at the bedside, so notes are written once, in the moment. Handover notes that pull in what already happened instead of starting from a blank page. And alerts that are few and meaningful, because when everything beeps, nothing gets noticed
Ask the people who use it
The best way to improve hospital software is simple: watch nurses use it, and listen. They’ll tell you in ten minutes what a long requirements document might miss. Any system worth buying should be tested by the people who will use it every shift
Where to start
You don’t need to replace everything at once. Pick one common patient journey, such as an outpatient visit, and walk it yourself. Count how many times the same information is asked for or typed in. That number tells you where to begin
